Explain: What is MetaData

What is MetaData

Metadata is data about the data, in other words, it is information about the information.

There is too much data in this world but in order to find the correct data, you need data.
For example, there is too much data on google, but in order to search for data using the google search bar, you need some keywords to be put in before google actually provides you data from thousands of pages. That is metadata.

To make it simple: we all watch the 1-2 hour movie at home/theater, right!!!

The movie itself is data that has lots of data in each scene, it has a story, songs,  characters, actors ..etc.

At the end of the movie you get details about the movie, summary, which is metadata of the movie

Movie Metadata
Actor
Director
Produced by
Cast
Editor
Writer
Cinematographer
Side actors
Crew Names
Film Review( Star Ratings)

Metadata of photograph

The photo was taken by: Sid

Types of MetaData :

  1. Descriptive
  2. Structural
  3. Administrative
  4. Reference
  5. Statistical
  6. Technical
  7. Business
Descriptive Metadata: Deals with the description of the resource, material, which is nothing but the identity of the resource. An example is on the book cover you have details about Book Name, Publisher, Author Name ..etc

Descriptive MetaData

Structural Metadata: It tells about how data is arranged together, what is the relationship between different data points. This helps us to get tot he right record instead of searching for random data.
An example if Book index you have the table with chapter names and the page numbers mentioned in fron of the chapter. This will helps us to get to directly to respective page number instead of flipping the random pages.

Another example is of Cable/Dish TV, we initially go to the menu button of the remote which displays what all channels are tagged to which number and then we go to the desired channel by pressing numbers.
Structural MetaData

Administrative MetaData: This type of data gives more details about the data like type of data so in digital terms whether it is a file, sheet, image (.txt,.csv,.excel,.jpg ..etc) .
Author of the data, when the data was created/edited or changed. It aswell contains the access/permission information to the data type. Copyrights, intellectual property right information as well as part of the administrative metadata.
An example: in a word document or in an excel sheet properties tab you can track the details which we have described above.
Administrative metadata

Statistical or Process Metadata: It is the output of processed data, generally used to determine some or other output from the available data to reach the conclusion.
So you already have data in place, then you allow that data to go through various stages of processing logic, algorithms, correlations ..etc.
An example is that you have supercomputers asked to process huge amounts of data to provide output to scientists.
Example during server load testing that which gathers like Disk I/O, CPU, Memory utilization ...etc
